Essential Techniques for Developing Effective Course Materials

Essential Techniques for Developing Effective Course MaterialsFrom DMP Organic Chemistry all the way to Standardized Teaching Assessment, many students find their education suffers as a result of the behavior of teachers and other students. In order to make sure that students know the contents of the text and understand the concepts of the course, it is crucial to provide effective teaching methods and lesson planning. This article describes a few key techniques that can help you plan your next course.Students often think that teachers 'copy' from chemistry texts and that they are not responsible for their own learning. However, this could not be further from the truth. It is important to give students plenty of opportunities to gain experience in reading and comprehending written materials, but there are also some instances when you will want to give them opportunities to demonstrate their understanding through writing. One thing you can do to provide students with opportunities to p ractice their writing skills is to use lesson plans. What does a lesson plan involve? Basically, it involves a schedule of related reading, periodic quizzes, group activities, and an assignment or two. The group activity may include anything from filling out a form on a workbook to writing a research paper. Not every student is a good teacher. If you want to increase your teacher-student ratio, then a lesson plan is an excellent way to do so. Just remember to structure your lessons around several key principles:My own experience in a high school's classroom environment has taught me that it is easier to interact with one another than it is to interact with a large number of different students. The more students you have to interact with, the more difficult it is to keep your interaction fresh and lively. With a good lesson plan, however, you can keep the interaction fresh and lively with lots of small group activities.Teachers, and students, often find themselves dissatisfied with th e amount of time allotted for each lesson. A lesson plan, however, is a flexible template for teachers to use in their lessons. One example of this would be to make it a weekly practice test.I've seen plenty of different approaches to writing lesson plans that include placement of links to the most interesting material in your course content. You might link to sample exams that occur in the course and make sure that students can see what questions are asked on the exam before taking it. A good example of this is through a review quiz. Most students will find a test easier to prepare for if they have a good idea of what's going to be on the test.Of course, one way to increase the rate at which students will know and understand a particular topic is to introduce multiple sources of information structures in a day. Take the two units you have selected for the day and arrange them into a logical sequence. As a result, students will be able to work through the lesson on their own without you having to take the time to prepare an entire lesson.

Linear Equation Solver

Linear Equation Solver In order to solve a Linear Equation in one variable of the type ax + b = 0 where a is not equal to 0 we distribute the terms within parenthesis and simplify both sides by collecting the like terms. Then we isolate all variables on one side and all the constants on the other side. We simplify and make the coefficient of the unknown variable 1. Example 1: Solve: 5 3 (5x + 2) = 4 (7- 3x) + 1 Solution: 5 3 (5x + 2) = 4 (7- 3x) + 1 5 15x 6 = 28 12x +1 [Distributing the terms within parenthesis] -15x -1 = -12x + 29 [On Simplifying the like terms we get] - 15x + 12x = 29 + 1 [Isolating the variable on one side and the constant on other side] (- 3)x = 30 [Divide both sides by -3 and we will get] x = -10 Example 2: The sum of two numbers is 90 and the greater number exceeds thrice the smaller by 14.Find the numbers. Solution: Let the smaller number be x. As the sum of the two numbers is 90, then the greater number will be 90 x. Thrice the smaller number will be 3x So the equation becomes: 90 x = 3x + 14 -x -3x = 14 90 [Isolating the variable on one side and the constant on other side] (-4)x = - 76 [Divide both sides by -4 and we will get] x = 19 Then the greater number will be 90 x = 90 19 = 71 Hence the two numbers are 19 and 71.

How To Improve Your SSAT Math Score

How To Improve Your SSAT Math Score At first glance, the SSAT Math Section (also known as the quantitative section) may seem like a bunch of simple computations, but its much more difficult than that. The clock is constantly, constantly ticking and the questions are written to confuse you. But, if you have the right SSAT prep strategy and the right SSAT tutor to guide you through the test, youll improve your SSAT Math Scores dramatically. SSAT Math Practice tests/SSAT Tutor: Taking practice tests and reviewing them with your SSAT tutor is best way to improve your score. Practice tests alone can only help you so much, as they just show you where you struggle and give brief explanations to questions. If youre serious about improving your SSAT Math Scores, youll need to do a lot more than just find out where you struggle. A professional SSAT tutor can show you how to improve on the questions that are most difficult for you. Thats the only way to learn the information and answers questions correctly on the test. Can I use a calculator? No. Avoid using a calculator on your math homework or on your SSAT practice tests. Your brain needs to get used to doing simple math without a calculator. But, you will be allowed to use scratch paper and doing so is highly recommended. You can avoid making silly, mental mistakes by writing out every step of your work. How long is the SSAT Math section? There are two separate tests, and you have to answer 25 questions in 30 minutes for each SSAT math test, leaving you just over a minute for each question. There is a quarter of a point penalty for getting an incorrect answer on the SSAT; so do not blindly guess. But, if , and only if, you can narrow the question down to three answer choices, then guess. If you find yourself taking more than a minute on a question, make an educated guess and move on. SSAT Math questions: For the most part, the SSAT Math tests your arithmetic, elementary algebra and geometry skills. But, youll need to know a lot more than just formulas and equations. Youll need to manipulate theories and formulas to solve word problems and real-world application problems thats why simply memorizing them is not enough. SSAT Math sequence questions: Sequences are basically just patterns with simplest being {1,2,3,4}. Or sequences can be alternating numbers {0,1,0,1,0,1} . For these questions, try to subtract or add numbers to find patterns. In this sequence {5,10,15,20 } each number is 5 more than the previous. Or, focus on odd/even numbers, prime numbers, exponents and multiplication to answer more difficult questions. Consider this question: In the following sequence {3, 5, 7, 9, 21, 23, 25 ...} what is the next number? First, look to see what the numbers have in common (theyre all odd), and look for something that seems a bit off, like how 10-20 is completely skipped. Thats how youll find the pattern is odd numbers that dont begin with a 1. The next number will be 27. SSAT Math percent questions: Percents are huge on the SSAT. But, this one simple equation: (Part x 100) / Total can help you answer just about every question. Consider this question:If Kyle got 12 out of 80 test questions wrong, what is the percent of questions he got wrong?Just multiply 12 x 100 = 1,200 . Then, divide that by 80 = 15 (15% is your answer). There will also be questions like: Whats 10% of 43?To answer these, move the decimal point over two places to the left. So 10.0 becomes 0.1. Then, multiply the decimal percentage by the number (0.1 x 43 = 4.3). You will probably even see questions like: 7 is what percent of 3?Just turn these into an algebraic equation (7 = n x 3). Then, just solve (n = 7/3 = 2.33). Then, turn 2.33 into a percent by sliding the decimal over two places to the left (2.33 become 223%). SSAT Math odd and evens questions:All you need to know with these is that even/odd numbers are always two apart in a series. Look at this set: (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8). The odd numbers are 1,3,5,7 (two apart). The even numbers are 2,4,6,8 (also two apart). Consider the following question: If X is an odd integer, what are the next two consecutive odd integers? A) Y and Z B) X and X+1 C) X+1 and X+2 D) X+2 and X+4 E) X+1 and X+3 D is the correct answer because odd/even integers are always two apart in a set. SSAT Math ratios and proportions questions: Just remember this: a proportion is two equal ratios. A/B = C/D or 3/5 = 21/35 (multiplying each by 7). Remember, 3/5 is a ratio and the whole equation is a proportion. On the SSAT, youll be asked to manipulate these equations, but remember they will always be equal. Consider this question: Solve for N: 5/10 = 15/N. First you have to find the relation between 5 and 15 (5 x 3 = 15). Now, just remember the two ratios must be equal. So, if you multiply 5 by 3 to get 15you must multiply 10 x 3 (which equals 30). So, N = 30. These are just a sampling of questions youll see on the SSAT Math section. What I Wish I Knew Before My First College Class

What I Wish I Knew Before My First College Class The following is a guest post written by Tiffany Sorensen, a tutor and contributing writer with Varsity Tutors. College differs from high school in a plethora of ways, and the transition can be brutal at times. But there is good news: you can learn from the mistakes of those who have already gone through it! To ensure a promising start to college, always go to class prepared and respect your professors rules. Here are three things I wish I knew before my first college class: [RELATED: A Day in the Life of a Medical Student] 1. I should arrive with the course syllabus A word to the wise: bring along a copy of the syllabus on your first day of college classes. Your professors will most likely email you the course syllabus or post it via an online portal before classes start. And whether or not your professor says so, he or she more than likely expects you to have printed this document and carefully read it before you walk into the initial lecture. By going to your first college class prepared with all the materials, you can avoid the embarrassment that I went through of being empty-handed. I remember how badly I wanted to make a positive first impression on my Spanish professor the first day. But instead of winning brownie points, I was stared down in the first row for having to glance at my neighbors syllabus. In college, only a handful of professors will go through the trouble of making photocopies for students. The majority of the time, it will be your responsibility to arrive with the notes, worksheets, and any other documents you might need to refer to in class. 2. I should hold off on buying textbooks right away (unless the professor specifies otherwise) When you read over the course syllabus, you will probably discover a section that lists the course textbooks. Maybe the new and anxious college student in you will tell yourself that you should buy the textbooks sooner rather than later. This may be a good instinct, but in my opinion, I found the opposite to be true: you can often save yourself money and frustration by holding off initially. College professors are humanthey make mistakes, too. It is possible that the version of the course syllabus the professor sent is not updated or contains errors. The professor is sure to mention the course textbooks on the first day, so you may wish to wait at least until then to order them (keep in the mind, however, that this may not be the case for all coursesmore intensive courses will likely make it clear when the listed books are crucial for the first day of class, so pay attention to all communications). Your professor may recommend a particular website or bookstore for buying the books at a better price, or he or she may have listed a book as recommended but disclose that its not ultimately necessary to buy it. One of my earliest regrets in college was buying all the recommended textbooks blindly when I could have fared just fine just with the required ones. Of course, no one will fault you for going above and beyond the required readings, but if you are on a tight budget, eliminating a few unneeded books can be helpful. [RELATED: What is it Like to Attend Stony Brook University?] 3. I should not assume my professor allows eating in class Some professors are okay with their students snacking or having a cup of coffee in class, while others frown upon it or outright forbid it. It all depends. Usually, the policy on food is outlined in the course syllabus, but there is nothing wrong with asking for clarification. Even if your professor does not like the idea of you having food or drink in class, he or she may make an exception if you ask politely, keep it neat, and throw out your garbage. My junior year of high school, I did not have a lunch period. Instead of taking a lunch break, I took an AP class that fulfilled a college-level requirement. My high school teachers knew about my hectic schedule, so they allowed me to eat and drink in class without any problems. I just assumed my college professors would have the same attitude, but this was not the case! When one professor recoiled at the gigantic burrito I was going to enjoy in Literary Analysis, I realized I should have asked for permission first or, better yet, eaten beforehand. Who knew something as simple as printing the syllabus could make the first day of college classes less painful? The little things go a long way. Take my advice to ensure a successful first day, and relax: by the second week, you likely will have already fallen into the rhythm of college. Check out Tiffanys tutoring profile.
